Running, Cycling, Triathlon, Strength, Other AI level: Rule-based adaptive Adaptive plan AI only Included with device pushes workouts to 2 devices
Garmin Coach is the training-plan feature of the Garmin Connect app for owners of compatible Garmin watches and Edge computers. It includes expert-authored run plans (5K to half marathon, adjusting to performance) and the adaptive Garmin Run Coach, Cycling Coach, Triathlon Coach and Fitness Coach programs, which Garmin says change daily workouts using VO2 max, lactate threshold, training load and status, recovery time, sleep and stress. Workouts sync to the watch or Edge; there is no chat coach and no third-party device support. The plans are free; Garmin sells an optional Connect+ subscription for extra content.
Rule-based adaptive. The plan re-flows or scales by fixed rules (missed session, RPE, completed volume). Typical of incumbents such as watch-maker coaches and template-based running apps. source

Scores
1–5 per dimension by the published rubric. Each score links to its evidence. Blank means no public evidence yet.
| Dimension | Score | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Plan quality | 4 | Plans are built on Garmin's documented VO2 max, lactate-threshold, training-load/status and recovery-time models; a forum user running it beside TrainerRoad found it more polarised with more volume. Reviewers note optimistic race predictions and no heat adjustment. evidence checked 2026-10-13 |
| Adaptation | 4 | Hands-on reviewer (2026) confirms daily sessions lighten after poor sleep/HRV/stress; Garmin documents the inputs. TrainerRoad forum users found Cycling Coach less adaptive than TrainerRoad/Runna and ignoring rest-day settings; no subjective-feedback input. evidence checked 2026-10-13 |
| Workout feedback | 3 | Independent reviewer: structured intervals, pace targets and HR alerts execute well on the watch, but there is no workout-by-workout coaching review and no weekly summary beyond device metrics. evidence checked 2026-10-13 |
| Coaching relationship | 1 | Reviewer (UESCA coach) notes there is no way to ask a coach questions; another 2026 review notes no human or chat access and only basic post-run feedback. evidence checked 2026-10-13 |
| Transparency | 2 | Reviewers call the plan a black box: only about a week is visible ahead and changes are not explained with triggers; Hnatiuk also found little explanation of why workouts changed. Garmin publishes its metric methodology. evidence checked 2026-10-13 |
| Value for money | 5 | Free with any compatible Garmin device; independent reviewers (Hood 2026, Hnatiuk, shoulditrain 2026) agree it is the best free structured-plan option, with Connect+ optional. evidence checked 2026-10-13 |
| Athlete sentiment | 3 | Mixed: TrainerRoad forum users found it structured but less adaptive and buggy; Hnatiuk and RunningDisneyTravel found it useful but with paces too fast and no coach contact; shoulditrain cites injured older runners alongside PRs. Reddit was not reachable. evidence checked 2026-10-13 |
